Defender>Virus and Threat Protection>Exclusions>Add Exclusion (exe process). The reason that protection trips is because under normal circumstances, many of your important files are in your User folder, and that's the prime target of ransomware. Windows 10 Defender has protection on that, so you would need to add an exception for that very thing.
