7777, i dont think it matters on the belt placement, you can install it either way. The key is after you get the tension set just make sure the distributor is pointing the way i said, if it is off alignment on the #1 electrode in the dist cap then you run into having to make extreme adjustments to compensate for it being a tooth off and most of the time you cannot get enough out of turning it.
Regular 3-10 mile journeys are bad for a diesel which has a DPF, unless there is at least one long continuous journey (50+ miles) every 2 weeks at a minimum, preferably every week. The engine needs to get up to full working temperature to allow the DPF (and EGR valve) to clear soot/ash etc.

I do 6k miles a year (mainly 6-mile journeys @ 30 mph) and until very recently would have never considered a diesel. However, I've come across a number of HJ comments (see links below) reassuring potential buyers that the new Mazda 2.2 Skyactiv diesel engine should not suffer DPF problems thanks to its exhaust manifold in head configuration.
